Petaluma on track for new gas station ban

On January 11, at a joint meeting of the Petaluma City Council and the City’s Climate Action Commission a Climate Action Framework was adopted. The Framework includes 15 prospective actions that the city can consider and one of them, item 9, states the following: “Make permanent the moratorium on new gas stations and develop a plan for building out publicly available EV charging infrastructure and capacity to meet projected needs.”

This is big news. If Petaluma proceeds with the actions, it will become the first city in the county, possibly in the state, to enact a ban on new gas stations.

In terms of timeline, after councilmember D’Lynda Fischer confirmed that making the city’s moratorium on new gas stations permanent will turn it into a ban, the city manager, referring to the proposed gas station ban said “that one should be relatively quick and easy, it’s just a matter of bringing it to the council.”

The ban will be on the City Council agenda on February 22 at 6:30pm. Be there if you and and show your support!

For those of you in Santa Rosa, a similar action will be considered at the Santa Rosa Climate Action Subcommittee meeting on March 10 at 4 p.m. Be there!

CONGAS, the Coalition Opposing New Gas Stations, intends to support Petaluma all the way. Join us! Visit for information and updates.
